Wilderness Permit Obtained – Time to Start Training

Welcome readers,

Adam and I are happy to share with everyone that we have obtained the necessary Wilderness Permit for our Mt. Whitney hike.  We tried all day to fax our permit on the opening day and were met with a busy fax machine signal each and every time we tried to send it.  Ultimately, we were able to get out permit in two days later.  Our first date was granted and we are now well on our way to hike the High Sierra Trail from Crescent Meadow to Whitney Portal.  We will be heading out on Aug-2 and returning no later than Aug-11.

Now that we have our date nailed down and our Wilderness Permit in hand it is time to begin our training.  Both Adam and I are fairly active individuals and consider ourselves in decent cardiovascular shape.  However, in our daily activities we do not do much training at altitude.  Adam is an amateur bike racer and part of the Momentum Racing team from Fresno.  His cardio training will be encompassed in his training for his races through the rest of this season.  I dabble in the realm of Triathlons and train with Breakaway Training from San Diego.  I just finished running the Rock N’ Roll 1/2 Marathon in Pasadena, CA where I set a PR.  I am now in the process of training for the San Diego International Triathlon, my first attempt at this distance.  This will constitute my cardio training in preparation for our hike.

Adam and I are now in the process of setting dates from now until our hike to do monthly overnight backpacking trips in Sequoia and King’s Canyon National Parks.  This will serve a two-fold purpose.  It will allow to do some hiking at an altitude greater than sea level and it will allow us to get familiar with and break in the gear we will be acquiring for our hike.  We are also contemplating on trying to snag a Half-Dome permit to make that one of our overnight training hikes.

There are more exciting updates to come and we will be posting pictures of the gear we start to acquire and of our training hikes.  We would love to hear from our followers on any training ideas they have tried

Thanks again and standby for more to come!
